How do I mount a stainless steel chimney?

The installation of a stainless steel chimney should be left to the skilled installer, as these are the assembly instructions of the manufacturer and the particularities of the respective exhaust system are usually known. In addition, regulations regarding operational and fire safety must be observed.

Does one have to observe special specifications during installation?

Yes, because on the one hand there are different legal requirements concerning fire protection and on the other hand there are some others in the field of environmental protection. For an exact answer to this question, it is best to contact your chimney sweep, who will be happy to explain the legal regulations relevant to your construction project.

Which chimney suits my requirements?

Depending on the type of existing or newly planned fireplace, many different exhaust systems are available for relining or new construction in a variety of materials and wall thicknesses.

On the one hand there is the classic chimney with ceramic inner pipe, which is suitable for all fuels and is usually operates in negative pressure.
On the other hand, the modern and elegant stainless steel exhaust systems meet both the high visual requirements and the ever-increasing criteria for the exhaust gas discharge of modern fireplaces. Depending on the manufacturer and the system, these are suitable either for negative pressure or even for high pressure up to 5000Pa.

For modern oil and gas condensing units, exhaust systems must be used which are moisture-resistant and at the same time suitable for overpressure / high pressure. These requirements are usually meet by plastic or stainless steel exhaust systems, in some cases also systems with ceramic inner pipes.

Can an exhaust system be installed indoors?

Yes, however, a lot of attention must be paid to this because flue pipes and chimneys that have to pass through the floors within a building have to comply with higher fire protection requirements.

If a chimney is installed in the building with several storeys, it must be according to the fire regulations of the federal states, with a fire resistance of 90 minutes e.g. a three wall chimney or the chimney (e.g.  a double wall stainless steel chimney) must be installed inside an approved light weight construction shaft, if the chimney does not have its own fire resistance.

Since there are other federal states-specific requirements, such a project should in principle be clarified with the responsible chimney sweep.

What is chimney relining and when does it have to be done?

Due to the low exhaust gas temperatures of modern fireplaces, it may be below the dew point and leads to condensation of the bound moisture in the exhaust. This can lead to the old, mostly single-shell, chimneys soaking up moisture, which can dampen the masonry, causing damage to the building.

Here a chimney relining comes into play, this is basically nothing other than the adaptation of the existing shaft to the new fireplace. The refurbishment takes place with stainless steel or plastic exhaust systems, depending on the fuel used. These systems usually have modular construction therefore, the assembly is usually very simple. Normally, this is done from the chimney top of the existing chimney.

How many inspection openings are necessary?

In general, as many cleaning openings are necessary so that the exhaust system can be easily and safely cleaned or checked. This is fulfilled when the requirements of DIN V 18160-1 are complied with.

The arrangement of the required openings should therefore be discussed in advance with the competent chimney sweep.
